Abstract:
In a market characterized by cut-throat competition, it is crucial to differentiate oneself from the competition in terms of price, quality and delivery time. One strategic way to do this is to concentrate on the core business through make-or-buy decisions. The aim of the project was to develop a method to support make-or-buy decisions that takes into account cost effects and qualitative determinants of vertical integration as a whole and enables a complete evaluation. In order to analyze the make-or-buy decision, a study was conducted in eleven companies of the expert group Production Organization. At the same time, the procedure was examined in three companies using practical examples. The analysis revealed a need for action with regard to the cost transparency generated and the cause-based cost evaluation as well as the identification of interdependencies between quantitative and qualitative decision components. The decision-making situation was described using a process- and resource-oriented model and a catalog of qualitative criteria to take into account the influencing factors that cannot be captured by cost accounting. The methodology based on this comprises the determination of the core and peripheral assemblies, the process analysis, the resource-oriented cost evaluation and the qualitative evaluation as well as the linking of the two components. The solution developed as part of the research project enables small and medium-sized manufacturing companies to optimize their vertical integration of services and products. An IT tool was developed to support the implementation of the required work steps in the company. The application of the IT tool is described in a guideline for speaker-supported make-or-buy decisions. Scope of report:
