Abstract:

To determine the applicability of HT thermoplastics for dry-running plain bearings, the friction and wear behavior was tested both on simple test specimens and on cylindrical bearing bushes. Modified HT thermoplastics are suitable for increasing the application limits of these bearings due to their high temperature resistance, the partly excellent tribological behavior and other properties. For pre-selection, tests were carried out on a pin-on-disc apparatus, varying the normal force, the sliding speed and the sliding surface temperature. The friction and wear behavior of 18 different modifications, mainly from the PAEK group, were assessed. A high-performance radial plain bearing test rig was developed and built to carry out practical component tests, allowing the load, speed and temperature to be set within wide limits and the temperature, friction and wear to be measured continuously with high precision. Solid bearings made of modified HT thermoplastics, metal-plastic composite bearings with a running layer of modified PEEK and bushings made of engineering thermoplastics were tested on this test rig. Their suitability for plain bearing applications was assessed on the basis of the friction and wear values determined, the temperatures measured and other criteria. Several materials qualified for plain bearing applications in the preliminary tests, three of which delivered good results over the entire tested range. In general, the operating behavior of the bearings is strongly influenced by the operating parameters and the structural design. For high loads, fiber reinforcement of the thermoplastic matrix is essential, whereas this reinforcement should be omitted for low loads. By improving heat dissipation from the sliding zone, it is possible to further increase the application limits of the bearings, as the pin-on-disc tests show. Composite bearings made of metals and HT plastics are particularly suitable for development. The performance of the tested materials significantly increases the application limits of dry-running plastic bearings. Scope of report:
