Abstract:
Circumferential bending tests were carried out on the quenched and tempered and nitrided condition of steel 31 CrMoV 9 (1.8519) on three specimen diameters, two shape numbers and five surface layer variants with comparable base material properties and statistically verified Wöhler curves were determined. The Wöhler curve parameters are decisively dependent on the position of the crack red (on or below the surface). The crack location is determined by the sample geometry, the nitriding hardness depth, the residual stress curve and the surface hardness. For unnotched and weakly notched specimens with cracking below the surface, the fatigue strength can be estimated according to the concept of Kogaev and Serensen and the standardized Wöhler scatter band can be used to predict the fatigue strength independently of the surface layer structure and the stress gradient for nitrided components. The accompanying tensile pressure tests showed that above (batch-dependent) total strain amplitudes of 0.003 to 0.0055 mm/mm, early failure is triggered by cracking in the nitrided layer. PSWT Wöhler curves were used to successfully predict the service life of strain- and stress-controlled single and multi-stage tests.
