The EU Commission is in the process of establishing a data economy. This is expected to generate an additional gross domestic product of 270 billion euros by 2028. For a country like Germany in particular, which has no natural resources worth mentioning, this sounds lucrative at first. However, such a data economy will not only create a new
market, new players and new business models. It will also have a profound impact on the current understanding of machine and system manufacturers as to how data from their machines should be handled, forcing them to rethink. The legal lever for creating the data economy, the EU Data Act, sets new and mandatory requirements for the technical design of machines and systems and gives their users the right to access machine data.
