The aim of this guideline is to evaluate the development potential of customer-specific Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) solutions on the basis of standardized process indicators (KPIs) for product engineering and thus support the Continuous Improvement Process (CIP) in the product development processes of companies. The CIP is achieved when there is a permanent improvement in quality in all areas of a company, e.g. through

Process quality: this is achieved through clearly structured processes.

Product quality: this is achieved, for example, through data and information quality.

Service quality: this is achieved through internal and external customers.

Project organization: this is achieved through flexible project management.

Furthermore, the CIP is achieved by shortening throughput times and/or reducing costs. A pure reduction in throughput time supports efforts to achieve an early time-to-market.

The benefit of standardizing the process indicators lies in the uniform evaluation methodology for recording the actual maturity level of PLM solutions in the product development process (PDP). The standardized procedure saves time when determining your own status. It is designed to identify a wide range of optimization potentials. The main focus is on the following PIPE processes:

Change management
Requirements management
Configuration management
Project management
Collaboration management

First of all, basic terms are defined in chapter 2. Chapter 3 describes the above PIPE processes and Chapter 4 describes the process indicators. The process indicators are prepared, described and standardized in the same way as VDMA standard sheet 66412-1 MES indicators. Chapter 5 describes the use of the PIPE tool developed in this working group using an EXCEL solution.
